Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen several polls with results all over the map. An internal poll for Ted Cruz showed him up by nine points. An internal poll for David Dewhurst showed him up by eight points. Another poll by the Cruz-backed Citizens United Political Victory Fund found – big surprise! – that Ted Cruz is ahead. And a PPP survey found the race essentially within the margin of error.
But there’s only one poll that matters: The vote tally on July 31st.
David Dewhurst received nearly 150,000 more votes than Ted Cruz on May 29th, and political experts throughout Texas continue to believe that Dewhurst will be victorious in the runoff later this month. But those facts are not enough.
Unless you’re living under a rock, you’ll have to acknowledge that the Republican primary race for the U.S. Senate is going to be close. Which is why it’s important that everyone know the facts about who the proven conservative in this race really is.
It was David Dewhurst who cut taxes 51 times, including the largest tax cut in Texas history.
It was David Dewhurst who balanced the Texas budget five straight times without raising taxes.
It was David Dewhurst who passed legislation in the Texas legislature requiring sonograms before abortions.
It was David Dewhurst who passed legislation to defund Planned Parenthood.
It was David Dewhurst who passed a strong voter ID law to crack down on election fraud.
It was David Dewhurst who passed the Texas Defense of Marriage Act, firmly establishing that marriage is between one man and one woman.
With this record, it’s little wonder why in just the past few days the Houston Chronicle and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram have both issued official endorsements of David Dewhurst. Both papers noted Dewhurst’s ability to work within the complex legislative process to pass conservative laws, even getting Democrats to join him.
Ted Cruz wants to pretend this means he’s some sort of “moderate” who just wants to get along with other politicians. But if David Dewhurst can get Democrats to support a Republican agenda, isn’t that the greatest stake in the heart of liberalism that one could achieve — forcing the other side to recognize not only the folly of their beliefs, but also the superiority of conservatism?
The reality is that David Dewhurst has a conservative record of which Ted Cruz can only dream. And because Ted Cruz’s sole motivation to get elected to the U.S. Senate is to hang out with his pals in Washington, D.C., he has had no reason to prove how he would work on behalf of Texas voters.
But David Dewhurst has, and his conservative record speaks loud and clear.
We’re nearing the final stretch, and though the race may be close, the differences between the candidates could not be more stark: A proven conservative with a record of results like David Dewhurst, versus a smooth talking lawyer like Ted Cruz.
Ignore the polls and ignore the hysteria on the airwaves. If you’re a conservative, get off your tail and help make sure a proven conservative like David Dewhurst is the next U.S. Senator from Texas.
